MANUFACTURING

One of the original focuses of the project involved the development of technology and components for prefabricated façade elements. There are numerous prefabricated products and solutions for retrofitting the thermal envelopes of buildings currently available in the industrial market. The current and most recent research into the development of prefabricated thermal envelope elements and materials innovation has shown the market to have matured to the point where research is now focusing on the use of recycled/low embodied, nano-technology and polymer material to enhance the performance characteristics of façade elements, insulation and interior wall panels (See Table 1).

Following (i) discussions with European partners (through the European Construction Technology Platform) and SEAI, (ii) attending the Advanced Building Skins Conference in Austria, (iii) the focus of current and most recent research into the development of prefabricated thermal envelope elements and materials innovation and (iv) the numerous prefabricated products and solutions for retrofitting the thermal envelopes of buildings currently available in the industrial market and (v) the opportunities the on-going research into the real-time monitoring of dwellings is presenting, it was decided to refocus the research will involve the real-time monitoring of dwellings has been implemented to identify the most effective renovation measures that consider the profiles of (1) the physical building, (2) its occupants and (3) the community.
